Advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture, tradition

The state has developed guidance material to assist local government advance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture and tradition in land use planning.

One of the ways to do this is by engaging with their local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities when making or amending local planning schemes.

We've worked with the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) to design a course that provides planning professionals with an understanding of how to reflect Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ interests in the plan-making process.

  • The course is presented in three parts and features the following topics:

    • native title and cultural heritage relationship with the plan-making process
    • effective engagement with Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples
    • plan-making and policy development, in the context of how land use planning responds to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage values and interests.

    Learning outcomes

The course builds on the guidance material available above and helps planning professionals to learn more about:

    • the complexities, nuances, and challenges of Indigenous planning and the plan-making process
    • guidance on how the purpose of the Planning Act 2016 could be applied
    • the importance of engagement, native title and cultural heritage in developing robust planning outcomes
    • the implementation of the purpose statement 5(2)(d) of the Planning Act 2016 in the plan-making process
    • approaches to recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island knowledge, culture and tradition in the plan-making process
    • planning laws/instruments relating to native title and cultural heritage laws
    • native title and cultural heritage rights affecting plan-making and engagement outcomes
    • cultural protocols and meaningful ways of actively engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and stakeholders
    • approaches to developing strong, inclusive and fit for purpose policy
